Solidarity With APS Martyrs: All Schools, Colleges to Remain Closed Today

In a poignant display of solidarity with the martyrs of the 2014 Army Public School (APS) Peshawar tragedy, the Punjab government has announced the closure of all public and private schools, as well as colleges, in Islamabad and Lahore on December 16. This move comes as the nation marks the anniversary of one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in Pakistan’s history, which claimed the lives of over 140 people, predominantly children, at the hands of militants.

The notification regarding the closure was issued by Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner, Irfan Nawaz Memon, who confirmed that all educational institutions in the capital would remain shut for the day. Similarly, Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner, Syed Musa Raza, confirmed that schools and colleges in the city would observe the closure in line with the provincial government’s directive. However, universities in Lahore will remain open as per the government’s decision.

The tragic APS attack on December 16, 2014, not only shocked the nation but also left a lasting scar on the collective memory of Pakistan. The attack, carried out by Taliban militants, targeted the APS campus in Peshawar, resulting in the loss of over 140 lives, most of them innocent children, along with teachers and staff. The day has since been observed annually as a day of remembrance and tribute to the martyrs, while also serving as a reminder of the country’s ongoing struggle against terrorism.

The closure of educational institutions serves as a solemn reminder of the nation’s commitment to honoring the lives lost in the tragedy and standing united against terrorism. It is a day for reflection, mourning, and expressing solidarity with the families of the victims who continue to bear the heavy emotional burden of that horrific day.
